Aveed Long-Acting Testosterone Approved by FDA

Aveed is the U.S. equivalent to the long-acting testosterone formulation known in other parts of the world as Nebido, and it was recently approved by the FDA. Aveed is being touted as having “major advantages” over T. cypionate and T.enanthate, including fewer injections (about every 2 to 3 months), less fluctuation in testosterone levels, and possibly less risk of erythrocytosis.

Trans Masculine Identities In India

“If trans people are a minority with almost no rights in this country [India], transmen are a minority within that minority.” Just as “there are hijras, kinnars, mangalamukhis, aravanis, kothis, jogappas, shiv shaktis among trans women as identities, there is a wide range of trans masculine expressions”, says an Indian transman, one of 74 that co-signed a letter to the Indian Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, “We have many names to identify ourselves like bhaiya, thirunambi, gandabasaka, babu, ftm, trans man etc. For an umbrella term, to refer to us in all our diversity, we would like the use of the term, trans masculine. We do not identify with PAGFB [Persons Assigned Gender Female at Birth] which is what is being used in reports and meetings here to describe our identities. We strongly urge you to refer to us by identities that we assume, not ones that are imposed on us without due democratic discussions and consent.”

Another “term for FTM in Hindi is Sadhin“. Last November, an Indian trans man fled the country after being ‘outed’ by the media and sought asylum in the UK. This was before this week’s more positive news for trans rights. Although more sparse, trans masculine support does exist in India, but they have a lower profile in society, media and rights activism.

Transportraits by Lorenzo Triburgo

“For Transportaits, I have created a series of unlikely heroic portraits that examine representations of American masculinity, using [transgender] men set against a created environment. Following the path of 19th century portrait and landscape artists such as John Singer Sargent and Alfred Jacob Miller, I simultaneously reference classic and contemporary photographic portraiture and consider the origination of American male identity.” - Lorenzo Triburgo

Lorenzo is a native New Yorker currently residing in Portland, Oregon. He holds a BA from New York University in Photography and Gender Studies and an MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in New York. His photographs have been exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Philadelphia and abroad. He has work in the permanent collection at the Portland Art Museum, has been awarded the Aaron Siskind Grant and has been published in PDN. Transportraits was recently selected for inclusion in the 4th Annual Competition and Exhibition at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, (June 13 – August 24, 2013) and will be exhibited in “Framed: Identity and the Photographic Portrait” curated by Francine Weiss (September 3-October 12, 2013) at the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University.

Scar Care Many Years Post-Op.

I’ve done a lot of research into scar care, and I agree with your assessment that the massage you’re doing is helpful, likely more so than the Bio Oil. Bio Oil is OK, but it has vitamin E, which can make scars worse for some people. There are better solutions.

Do NOT Take Shark Cartilage Supplements for Top Surgery

There’s some good advice in this post, but taking shark cartilage supplements is definitely a bad idea. This shark cartilage recommendation for top surgery has been on the web for years. Michael Munson’s post citing David Harrison may be the original source; it’s also been listed on Compass FTM, as well as FTMichael’s site. Passing this particular piece of advice around needs to stop. NOW.

Reason #1: Lack of Scientific Data

There is no scientific evidence that shark cartilage is useful in treating or preventing cancer or other diseases. Controlled trials have shown no benefit to shark cartilage supplements, and shark cartilage contains potentially toxic compounds linked to Alzheimer disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. - Wikipedia

Reason #2: Ethically and Environmentally Irresponsible

The ongoing consumption of shark cartilage supplements has been linked to a significant decline in shark populations, and the popularity of these supplements has been described as a triumph of pseudoscience and marketing over scientific evaluation. - American Association for Cancer Research

Why is the decline of the shark population a concern?

In general, sharks grow slowly, mature late and produce few young over long lifetimes, leaving them exceptionally vulnerable to overexploitation and slow to recover from depletion. As key predators, their depletion also has risks for the health of entire ocean ecosystems. For example, tiger sharks have been linked to the quality of seagrass beds through their prey, dugongs and green sea turtles, which forage in these beds. Without tiger sharks to control their prey’s foraging, an important habitat is lost. - PEW Trusts

To avoid an infection after top surgery, you don’t need shark cartilage. Save your money and simply follow your surgeon’s advice about keeping your incisions clean, eat well, live healthy, and you’ll be just fine.
